Boxing Scotland A/B Development Championships

The Boxing Scotland Development Championships is one of the biggest events on the Cathedral Boxing Club calendar. Every year the club enters boxers over an array of categories in the hope of being crowned Scottish champion in their respective groups. These categories are established as follows;

Development A - 0-3 bouts

Development B - 4-6 bouts

All competitors are also grouped by weight and year of birth up to 18. 18+ is classed as Elite.

This year Cathedral Boxing Club entered 7 boxers, achieving 2 gold and 3 silver medals across the competition.

Daniel Taylor

Daniel made his debut in the 2013, 46kg Dev A category. Despite facing a formidable opponent, Daniel fought valiantly across three 1-minute rounds. A standing count in the second round did not deter his spirit, and although he narrowly missed out on a win via split decision, he proudly brought home the club’s first medal.

Tamzin Donaldson

In another first ever bout, Tamzin moved up 2 weight categories to box in the 2009, 63kg Dev A category. It was action from the first bell, with both boxers landing their fair share of clean shots. Her opponent was visibly bigger and taller however that didn’t put Tamzin off with her boxing on the front foot, moving in and out as planned and straight through the guard to inflict a bad nose bleed on her opponent. The bout was stopped in the second round after an initial standing count, Tamzin securing a win in her first bout and the first gold medal for the club in the tournament.

Ritchie Webster

Facing a taller adversary in the 71kg Dev A category, Ritchie showcased his skill in his third bout. The match was closely contested, with judges finding it hard to separate the two. Despite the narrow loss, Ritchie delivered a stellar performance.

Hayden Murray

Boxing in the Elite 75kg B category, Hayden’s first bout was a quarter final. In an absolute brawl from start to finish, both boxers exchanged blows on the inside for the majority of the 3x2 min rounds. Hayden appeared to win all rounds, getting a unanimous win to go through into the next round the following weekend.

In the warmup for his semi-final bout, an old injury flared up in Hayden’s right hand causing excruciating pain every time it was thrown. Despite this, he bravely attempted to box but had to be withdrawn by the corner when the first straight right was thrown and landed square on his opponents forehead. Not the finish he wanted but these things happen and Hayden will be back out to box again soon!

Harry Clark

Starting with a semi-final in the 2012, 42kg Dev A category , Harry demonstrated a masterclass in guard and defence. Boxing on the front foot with a tight guard, he countered beautifully throughout to comfortably win all 3 of the 1 minute rounds.

In the final Harry was met with a bigger opponent with a very high work-rate. Despite staying on the front foot, catching a lot of blows on the gloves or avoiding them all together with fantastic head movement; the judges preferred the high output from his opponent landing Harry the clubs 2nd silver of the tournament.

Boyd Valentine

A straight final - it was all on the line for Boyd in his only contest in the 2012, 46kg Dev A category. Starting strong, Boyd knocked down his opponent very early in the first round which was waved as a trip by the referee. The two boxers exchanged throughout the 3 rounds with Boyd getting the better of his opponent on most of the exchanges. Boyd won by unanimous decision becoming the Scottish campion of his category and securing another gold for the club.

Finlay Mullin

Finlay kicked things off with an outstanding performance the 2008, 66kg Dev B category. Controlling the centre ring from the bell, Finlay adopted a high workrate throughout the bout to keep his opponent busy and landed significant blows throughout the 3 x 2 minute rounds. There was no doubt at the final bell with Finlay’s hand being raised winning unanimously on the judges cards.

Facing a tough opponent in the final, Finlay came out strong again and appeared the more confident of the 2. Moving round the ring, applying pressure to his opponent, avoiding being hit and landing with high accuracy and effectiveness over all 3 rounds, the coaches felt despite the bout appearing close that he had done enough to secure the win. It wasn’t to be this time with Finlay losing out on a 2/1 split in what was a real show of skill and determination from both boxers.
